Abstract (1) When discussing properties of stars of low luminosity we should first define what we mean by that term. My own feeling is that a bolometric luminosity of of that of the Sun appears to be a reasonable upper limit for ‘low luminosity’. Low-mass stars have low temperatures and low luminosities. Objects of extremely low mass never achieve high-enough central temperatures to ignite nuclear reactions. The lower end of the main sequence stops where stars have a mass just barely great enough to sustain nuclear reactions at a sufficient rate to stop gravitational contraction.

The classic low-mass star is the Sun. Low-mass stars have large convection zones when compared to intermediate- and high-mass stars.
